Adam Alexander, 2017-2018 Intern Extraordinaire In A Day in the Life, Summer Camp Posted September 20, 2017

Adam Alexander, 2017-2018 Intern Extraordinaire

Hello!  I’m Adam, Ferncliff’s newest intern.  I was raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and grew up going to camp in southeast Nebraska.  It was there, making nettle tea and listening to honey bees pollinate fields of clover, that I made lasting discoveries about myself, nature, and God.  I started volunteering as a single week counselor in 2009 and began working full summer seasons in 2012.  I credit my experiences as a camp summer staff member with directing me to decide to devote my efforts to becoming a camp professional.  I have spent the summers of 2015 through 2017 as Assistant Program Director at Calvin Crest in Fremont, Nebraska.  As both a camper and staff member, camp made an eternal difference in my life.  I have witnessed God change lives through the community, worship, and self discovery that camp fosters.  God has tuned me into a restless energy within myself to use my gifts and talents to serve camps like Ferncliff and fulfill their mission.

I am new to Arkansas!  So far, I have enjoyed exploring what Little Rock has to offer, as well as admiring the natural beauty of Ferncliff and the surrounding areas.  I am fascinated by insects and arachnids, neither of which is hard to find in this climate!

As an intern I will be receiving hands on experience of the goings-on at a camp during the conference season.  That means I will be helping to lead programming for our guests, as well as helping develop new programs with the guidance of the program staff.

In addition to camp programming, I will be helping with aftercare in Ferncliff’s nature preschool.  I am so excited about the opportunity to see young minds grow as they learn about the wonder of creation.  I almost wish that I could be four years old again so I could go to nature preschool!

IMG_3882 copyAnother part of my internship is the position of Children’s Church director at First Presbyterian, Argenta.  I find joy in teaching kids about the Bible and helping them grow their relationship with God.  First Pres’s congregation is small but mighty.  They want to be God’s hands and feet in Little Rock.  It is a blessing to be able to be a part of such an action-oriented church.

I enjoy discovering music that I’ve never heard before and learning to play instruments.  I have been teaching myself guitar for over ten years, and before I left Lincoln I was attempting to learn accordion.  Unfortunately, my full-sized accordion would’ve been impossible to fit in my car, so in Lincoln it waits.  I also enjoy working with my hands to create and repair.  I make walking sticks and other simple wood crafts, and I like to restore old hand tools.

I am thrilled to be a part of Ferncliff’s team!
