A week at summer camp is full of all sorts of positive experiences for campers: conversations over campfires, hiking through the woods and over streams, swimming, singing and playing endless games.
One experience that is among our camper’s favorites is canoeing on our lake. Every kid that comes to Ferncliff gets an opportunity to take a canoe or paddle boat out to explore our lake. There are few activities that embody what the camp experience is all about as much as canoeing does.
Canoeing invigorates the mind, body and the spirit. Canoeing is unstructured and campers have the freedom to explore a natural environment and go where they choose. Canoeing gives them the chance to try something new perhaps with someone new and build skills and friendships along the way.
Here’s a list of ten things that campers can get out of their canoeing experience:
Fitness, Confidence, Skill Development, Independence, Resiliency, Unstructured Play, Social Skill Development, Relationship Building, and Connection with Nature.
Keep an eye on social media and on our blog over the next week as we explore more deeply what canoeing can do for kids and how you can be a part of this celebration of generosity as we lead up to Giving Tuesday, or as we are calling it Giving Canoesday, December 1st.
