About Camp

First-Time Campers

First-Time Campers

New to Camp? You’re in the Right Place.

Exploring summer camp for the first time can feel like a big step—for kids and parents alike. At Ferncliff, we offer supportive, welcoming camp experiences designed to help first-time campers feel confident from the start.

If you’re asking questions like:

  • Is my child ready for camp?
  • What if they feel nervous or homesick?
  • How do overnights work?
  • How do I know which camp is the best fit?

You’re not alone—and you’re asking the right questions.

WHY FIRST-TIME CAMPERS THRIVE AT FERNCLIFF

  • Small family groups so campers are known by name
  • Caring, trained staff who prioritize safety and connection
  • Clear routines that help kids feel secure
  • Plenty of outdoor play, rest, and reflection
  • An inclusive, welcoming community for children of all faiths and backgrounds

We live out our faith through care, hospitality, and love—creating a place where every child belongs.

YOUR CHILD WILL BE KNOWN

At Ferncliff, campers are known by name. We intentionally design camp around small family groups so children don’t get lost in the shuffle or feel like a number. Our staff takes time to build relationships, notice what each camper needs, and help them feel at home.

SAFETY & CARE

We take safety seriously. Ferncliff has nurses on site 24/7, Red Cross–trained lifeguards for all water activities, and clear safety procedures across camp. All counselors are carefully selected, background checked, and highly trained before camp begins.

PRACTICAL COMFORTS & CONNECTION

  • We accommodate food allergies and dietary needs
  • Our staff supports campers through nerves, questions, and homesickness with care and patience
  • Our App keeps you connected all week long: you can write e-letters, and see pictures in real-time of your kid at camp

First-Time Overnight Camp (For Older Campers)

  • Pathfinder Program (Entering 3rd-5th Grade):
A first overnight camp experience designed for younger campers who are ready to try staying at camp. Pathfinders builds confidence and independence with extra support, clear routines, and caring counselors. Campers in this age range may also choose Discovery Camp or regular overnight camp sessions during the summer.
  • Trailblazer Program (Entering 6th–8th Grade):
A traditional overnight camp experience for middle school campers that balances growing independence with strong support, community, and structure.
  • High School Camps (Entering 9th–12th Grade)
Overnight camps that offer adventure, leadership opportunities, and meaningful community for older campers.

Considering Overnight Camp for the First Time?

For campers entering middle or high school, families often start weighing overnight camp for the first time. While Day Camp remains an option through 8th grade, Discovery Camps are designed for younger campers, which means overnight camp becomes a new possibility—sometimes sooner than families expect.

It’s completely normal for this option to feel like the biggest step. At Ferncliff, first-time overnight campers are supported with clear routines, small family groups, and caring counselors who help campers settle in, build confidence, and feel at home.
