Lent is now in full swing and my house and my house has chosen to go without meat. Yes, it does sound a bit crazy and when you have to entertain 15 – 250 kids, being a bit crazy can be a good thing. This choice for me is about becoming healthier. I’ll be honest and say I still have strong hankerings for a chicken sandwich. I have learned the more I take care of myself now, the better off I will be later in life. Going meatless for lent is going to be a first step. I still have a long way to go in the category of making better food choices as I still have a hard time choosing to eat vegetables.
Another change I have noticed while I have been here at Ferncliff is a different pace of life. I basically have grown up with the internet. I do remember the days of having to push 7 four times to get the letter S (something so very outrageous today). Otherwise life is full of instant gratification and when someone takes more than a day to respond to my text I get a bit irritated. Also working in the front lines with the kids in an enviornment where you live and work with people, relationships are accelerated. After a couple weeks, you go from “what is his name again” to “best friend”. In the average world, relationships can take months to go from acquaintance to friend. I dream of the day were my instincts are refined enough to know when it is time to reach out again to someone who hasn’t responded.
My time at Ferncliff has been great. I still am eagerly awaiting for summer camp comes and it is 0 to 100 in 2.5 weeks. Cheers.
